Are There Alternative Therapies For Diabetes?

Many people have become interested in exploring alternative treatments to conventional diabetes medical therapy. Proponents of several different herbal, vitamin and mineral treatments claim that they are effective in reducing blood glucose. However, these claims have not been proved in scientific studies — either because no studies have been done or studies have shown no benefit.
Currently, no alternative treatments are known to control blood glucose in the way diet, exercise, insulin and oral medications do. While you may be interested in benefits of herbal compounds or other alternative medications, it is best to think of them as complementary rather than alternative. Don’t stop taking pills or insulin shots! And do tell your doctor if you are using any alternative treatments, because some may interact in a negative way with other medications or foods.
