For a woman, nothing in the world can compare to the feel of beautiful smooth silk against her bare skin. She is at her most beautiful when she wears elegant silk lingerie that shows enough skin to entice yet still gives an ample amount of mystery. Silk has been the material of choice by women since time immemorial. However, this delicate but elegant material was, for a long time, affordable for only those in the upper class. Fortunately, by virtue of the advancements of technology, more women are now able to purchase their own silk garments. Why then do some women still hesitate to buy their very own silk lingerie?
The answer is simple – silk is rumored to be hard to clean and to care for. If anything, this is a complete and utter exaggeration. Silk is actually quite easy to care for. All you need is the right amount of prudence and patience. Here are some simple guidelines to use when cleaning your silk lingerie.
Know What to Use
Silk is a very delicate fabric. It’s strong so it won’t tear easily. But when it’s wet, it becomes very fragile. So, when you wash your silk lingerie, never use those strong detergents because they can harm the fabric. Instead, use a mild soap or a silk wash. You can even use shampoo, but make sure that the shampoo you use is colorless to avoid staining.
Know the Technique
Manufacturers of silk lingerie usually indicate that their products should be dry-cleaned. But this isn’t actually a strict rule. You can hand wash your silk lingerie if you want, but be sure that you’re extra cautious. You must separate it from other fabrics with different colors to avoid staining. Or better yet, wash it alone and just wash your other clothes later.
When soaping the silk lingerie, it should be soaked in lukewarm water for about five minutes. Just move the piece of cloth around gently. Avoid wringing the fabric because it might cause tearing. As I said, silk is a strong fabric but it is very delicate when it’s wet. Handle it with a lot of care if you want it to stay in tip-top shape.
When you’re done soaping the cloth, rinse it in cool water. Make sure that that you remove all the soap because if there’s excess soap, the silk will be a damaged and uneven patch might appear on the fabric. You can add a teaspoon of vinegar to the water to help remove the excess soap.
To dry the cloth, it’s better to just avoid the drier and dry it the natural way. Hang it inside your bathroom over your shower curtain or towel rods and wait for it to dry completely. Do not expose it to the sun as it may cause the color to fade.
You may also use a warm iron to press it. Just make sure that the temperature’s not too hot since high temperatures can damage the silk.
You don’t have to deprive yourself of elegance. All you have to give in order to experience the luxury of using silk lingerie is a bit of time and effort. And it will all be worth it once you see your beautiful reflection in the mirror, clad in your elegant silk lingerie.
